SCHOLAR IN BLOOM
Meet Amara
23 years old · Nigeria
Amara was 17 years old when she walked into Girl in Bloom. She was already working as a shopkeeper at a local market — long hours, little pay — and still she showed up every week for eight weeks without missing a single session.
As a member of our Global Ambassadors class, Amara led a social impact project focused on political involvement among youth. She graduated with flying colors. And we never forgot her.
A year later we followed up — because that is what we do. We keep up with our girls. It was then that Amara told us what she had been carrying quietly. She had been accepted into college. But she couldn’t go.
Her mother, a single teacher who had sacrificed everything, had invested in a savings scheme to fund Amara’s education. Someone stole the money. All of it. Amara had already lost a year.
We acted immediately.
Emergency funding got Amara back into school. She accepted her offer, enrolled, and has not looked back since. She is now a third year nursing student, an A student who shares her report cards with us every semester. She received a laptop — her first ever — and says it has transformed the way she learns.
During holidays, Amara volunteers at a local community clinic. She recently assisted with a baby delivery.
The girl who once sold goods at a market is now helping bring life into the world.
“We keep up with our girls. Because the story doesn’t end at graduation.”
Amara’s journey is proof of what happens when a girl gets the support she deserves.
Your gift keeps girls like Amara in school, equipped, and moving forward.
